Tyne & Wear company Gentoo is a people-property organisation that offers a variety of services. The company that launched in 2001 as a Registered Social Landlord in Sunderland, Gentoo is now a well respected landlord, developer and social investment group, working in over twenty-five local authority areas across the United Kingdom
Chief Exec, Mr.P Walls, tells us about the company's progression – changing the city skyline and residents lives for the better. Peter, said: “9 years ago, we embarked on a major project to regenerate the City. When complete, the project will result in under 4,000 new homes being built and an investment in excess of £400 million.
In September 2002, detailed neighbourhood assessments highlighted several estates that were very difficult to let either due to the stock condition or the fact that people did not want to live there and a renewal plan was developed. This resulted in some properties being demolished and rebuilt.
“In 2009, working in partnership with Sunderland City Council, Gentoo bid for and secured a £33,500,000. grant investment from the Homes and Communities Agency under their Kick-Start initiative. So far, nearly 1000 new houses have been constructed with ambitious plans to build a further 407 in Sunderland, by March 2011.
